Tereos/Datafolha Research shows: 34% are unaware of Climate Change, 89% Expect a Sustainable Agriculture.

A study conducted by Tereos, a French cooperative and global leader in sugar and food production operating in 15 countries, including Brazil, in partnership with the Datafolha Institute, reveals significant contrasts in the perception of the Brasilian population regarding climate change and global warming.
These are critical topics of responsibility in the year of COP 30, which will be held in Pará, the heart of the Brasilian Amazon. And this global event undoubtedly highlights the urgent need for an effective communication with society as a whole.
The survey interviewed over 2,000 people across all regions of Brazil, uncovering confusion, contrasts, and differing perceptions.
However, it also indicates an opportunity for our "Agrileaders” to take a stand and communicate much more effectively.
Tereos found that 34% of Brasilians are unaware of what climate change is!
This lack of awareness among social classes D and E rises to a staggering 54%. Additionally, 51% of Brasilians said they don't know what they could do to help reduce Greenhouse Effects.
However, when asked about "actions to care for the future of our planet," 55% said environmental preservation efforts are the most important; 29% mentioned proper waste disposal, and 15% highlighted the conscious use of water.
When asked "who" should take responsibility, 38% said it is of government's responsibility; 32% attributed it to society as a whole, and 22% mentioned industries.
Regarding specific actions that should be taken, the responses were: 41% mentioned deforestation and tree planting; 35% cited investment in renewable energy, and 34% emphasised reducing the use of fossil fuels.
When asked about clean fuels, the survey revealed that ethanol was mentioned by 51% of respondents. However, gasoline and diesel were also cited by over 20% of participants.
On the impact of Agribusiness on Greenhouse Effects, 38% said Brasilian Agriculture emits large amounts of greenhouse gases, while 29% said emissions are moderate. Only 4% believe Brasilian Agricultural Sector should play a fundamental role in combating Greenhouse Effects gases emissions.
On a positive note for Agribusiness, though, the survey showed strong national support: 89% of interviewed agreed Brazil should strive to be recognised as an example of sustainable Agribusiness, balancing production and environmental preservation. Additionally, 76% agree with the crucial role of Agriculture in the local economy.
Mr. Felipe Mendes, Director of Sustainability, New Business, and Institutional Relations at Tereos, stated: "Despite increased awareness of climate change, the survey shows there is still a considerable gap between what is said and the real action".
Mr. Pierre Santoul, CEO of Tereos Brazil, added: "Agriculture is a powerful lever to mitigate the effects of Climate Change through productivity. These actions are carried out at Tereos in line with international requirements".
Therefore, it's clear there's an urgent need for stronger and more competent educational communication to align public awareness and leverage the positive aspect that 89% of the population agree Brazil has the potential to be recognised as a global example of sustainable Agriculture.
On the other hand, there's a high level of ignorance about Climate Change and the actions everyone can and should take to address this issue, which is now the world's number one concern.
The Tereos-Datafolha survey also positively highlights that 76% of the population recognises the importance of Brasilian Agriculture to the national economy.
Thus, accurate information is crucial to combat the second greatest risk facing humanity today, after climate change: the destructive duo of misinformation and fake news.
